What’s the Difference Between Content Writers and Conversion Copywriters?

Imagine walking into the grocery store to see a crowd of people surrounding an employee near the coffee aisle. {We’ll call her Sheila}

Sheila’s telling her very engaged audience about a new brand of coffee and sharing how the coffee beans are uniquely grown in Costa Rica. She also tells stories about the farmers, the process they use, and provides many interesting facts about the beans.

At the other end of the aisle, there’s another employee with another very engaged audience. {We’ll call him Todd} However, this crowd is smaller and he’s sharing about a new brand of tea they just received in the store.

As Todd speaks, you see a customer walking away every minute with a box of tea heading toward the cashier to pay and leave.

Why? Why doesn’t this happen to the person sharing about coffee?

The answer is simple:

Sheila is educating her audience about coffee - giving facts, stories, and teaching about the process they use. She’s an expert on the subject!

Todd is sharing the tea's actual benefits—how it will help those who drink it and how it will make them feel afterward. He’s sharing how it’s a solution to many of their problems.

You see, Todd is speaking to the needs of his audience. Sheila isn’t. She’s entertaining her audience and drawing a big crowd, but she’s not compelling them to pick up a bag and purchase.

That’s the difference between a content writer and copywriter.

CAPTIVING CONTENT AND PERSUASIVE COPYWRITING ARE TWO DIFFERENT GAMES

Great content writers are awesome at educating, entertaining, and building trust for your business. They craft engaging blog posts, articles, and social media content that educates, entertains, and builds trust with your audience. They're the ones who position you as the go-to expert in your field.

But when it comes to closing the deal and making a sale, you need an expert conversion copywriter.

Here's the difference:

  • You need a content writer if: Your main goal is to attract potential customers, build brand awareness, and establish yourself as an authority.

  • You need an expert copywriter if your goal is to: Convert website visitors into paying customers. Copywriters use strategic language to create a sense of urgency, highlight your unique selling points, and ultimately compel your ideal client to take action.

Think of content as the warm-up act and conversion copy as the closer. Content gets your audience's attention and builds trust.

Conversion copy takes that trust and turns it into sales.

Expert copywriters understand how to speak directly to your ideal client's desires and pain points, crafting messages that resonate and motivate them to take action.
